Help me identify what series is my old D4?

I have had this old D4 for 18-20 years had been setting 15-20 years before that. Never could get the pony to run good and the left steering clutch was stuck so never used it much.  Been home sick so started watching PNW hillbilly D4 rebuild and started thinking about fixing mine.  I always thought it was maybe a 7J series because it was similar to one dad had.  No engine serial tag and the hyster winch covers the tractor number.  The Wallace blade that is on it is dated 1954 but I know the tractor is older than that.  I will attach some pics, thanks for the help, Mike

Think it might be a 5T, definitely not later than a J series. Don't know my D4s too well but the U series is distinctive to me and yours is not a 6/7U. If you carefully clean the paint from the area where the engine tag normally sits, the serial # is stamped into the block

Cheers,
Neil

Hi, Mschwartz.
My guess - either 7J or 2T. Your machine has the small outer track frame bearing. The 5Ts mostly had the later big outer track frame bearing.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

That is a 7J D4
Well the filter tower is a s/n 7J3512 - up with the upper flange for recirculation.
The transfer pump is a 7J636-up with the side inlet
The service meter is the type used on 7J1513-up but it also could be used to replace earlier versions.
Definitely not a 5T which has large  rear hubs.

Check the upper winch mounting. The 7J's did not have the four mounting bolt provision for the upper winch mounting bolts in the transmission/steering clutch cover until s/n 7J9216.
Looks to me like this is a Heinz 57 mix 7J.
Plate fenders were not an option on 7J's.

Hi Mschwartz,

I have attached a photo of the 2T that i have and when the winch was mounted on they had moved the SN plate to the position shown on the photo. The other position is it could be stamped on the edge of the flange on the  engine block below the injector pump.

Also some more to add to what OM said, is that style of pump and govner control was only used upto 7J5103

Regards

Daryl

There is a very good chance the serial number is stamped into the block edge at the oil pan seam. Your 2nd photo shows the left side of the engine... The stem of grass sticking up in the photo shows about where the number will start and proceed to the rear a short space. Its the engine portion of that very noticeable seam. Grins and giggles let us know if you find it.

I was thinking 4G, how long were clamp down injection valves used?

I was also wondering about what look to me to be early style injector valves. I think (but am not sure) that they changed to the smaller injectors someplace in the 4G series. Also the fenders on that tractor are the later thicker fenders. Hyster sold mounting brackets for the early D4s that you removed the fenders and put the brackets underneath the fenders and reinstalled the fenders. I have a Hyster winch from my dads RD4 that needed those brackets. The RD4 had very flimsy fenders compared to my D4 6U. The fenders on the U series are thicker than the Hyster mounting brackets. I think that the whole thing is a combination of old and newer parts, but with an angle blade, a winch and a canopy, that makes for a very practical old Cat.
