Hello. This is my first post here but I’ve done plenty of archive research on the forum. We recently purchased two 1986 Cat AG6 tractors.  We are using them for orchard renovation work that is hard on the rubber tracks of our challengers.  The tractors are working well for this purpose.  Both tractors need some TLC and are in the shop now.  We are redoing the cab interiors and plan to paint both tractors once the weather allows.  One of them has the 3 separate shift levers and the other has been converted to the more standard (and much better) single lever shift.  If someone still has an update kit for an ag6 I would be interested.  Also if someone else has already redone one and has a source for or files for a graphics designer to make new decals both inside and out.  One of the tractors would have used to of had a hydraulic swing drawbar.  This is long gone but the special bracket on the rear remains.  I would love to see pictures of someone else’s tractor that still has this attachment on it. Additionally I have become quite intrigued with these very unique and uncommon tractors so I would welcome any info or pictures of others that anyone would like to share.  I’ll try attaching a couple pictures of mine here. Thank you so much!

Rare birds! There is an AG6 near me (closer to Mr. CTSnowfighter) by the Sacramento river; The "font" closest that I believe, is "bold extended Eurostyle". It would be a stretch to find the decals, let alone much of anything except engine parts for them. I wonder how much of the Challenger 65 parts would mesh with them?
There is an unused AG4 in Stockton, CA that a friend of a friend has, even more unique than one of the 6's.
That almost looks like the rolling ground east of Turlock...just taking a wild guess...Nice pics!
What are you going to plant? JM

I have spent 5 years doing a frame up rebuild, the only thing that we did not touch was the engine. An AG6 is just a stretched D6D from what I have found out the last 92 D6Ds were converted and I think it was kind of a special order deal no two are exactly alike. Mine is 05X1339.and is a 1988 model and I think 05X1347 was the last in 1991, I did not have any trouble getting parts the only thing that interchanges with a Chalenger is the windshield. The cab on mine was converted from the open top and the guy who done it did a poor job and we cut it off and made a new cab with a red dot air conditioner, I did all of the controls new cables and converted anything that would be hard to get from Cat to standard off the shelf parts that are available today. I sandblasted everything but the engine and painted the heavy stuff with IMRON paint all of the other pieces were powder coated, I done it in a CAT yellow 2 was as close. as I could find to the original color. What a lot of work! I would have to give a lot of thought to before I tried such a thing again, There is a separate parts book that goes with the standard AG6 parts book for all of the modifications. That tractor is a real runner and will give those 4 wheel drive rigs a run for their money on a lot less fuel and is more nimble to get around with and rides nice. Mike

Boy, you'd want a/c in that cab wouldn't you. Six speeds forward and six in reverse - is that a standard D6 transmission? Reason I ask is I think some tractors (other models) have higher gears blocked in reverse

Cheers,
Neil

An AG6 has 5 gears ,some had 1st blocked out mine has 6th blocked which I like if for no other reason you Need 1st for loading on a lowboy. 4th is a nice gear for lighter work disking etc. 5th is too fast for anything would be hard on the tractor. And yes it is a D6C-D6D transmission as far as how many gears in reverse I don’t know I only use low gear

Thank you each for your responses and information. I appreciate it all. An unused or new AG4? That I would like to see! I had heard about the AG4 and even have a couple of pictures saved from the internet of one. We are located in Southeast WA near Tri-Cities which is where those pictures were taken. The ground we are working will go back into orchard. Both of our tractors came from the dry land wheat country in Northeast OR. There are several AG6’s here in the PNW. I know of 4 more in addition to ours within 60 mile radius of us. They are indeed a stretched D6D. Were finding parts availability is not to bad if your after the standard D6D parts, but the AG6 specific stuff is pretty much not available through cat. Both of ours came with the standard D6D-SA six speed transmissions. I do have all the books (service, parts, operators manul) so this helps a lot. I realize it was a long shot asking for some of the shifter parts but figured one never knows unless you ask! Ours are serial numbers 05X01257 and 05X01291 according the dealer they were made about 11 days apart in late 1985 but I wonder if that’s just when the serial numbers were issued?
I know that the tractors were built by the Egging Company in Gurley NE which was Cat’s custom shop at the time. Keep the info and pictures coming it helps us all! Thanks again!

I could never find out for sure if the Egging Co. was the one that did the conversions or not I did know they were doing a lot of work for Cat at the time. I wanted to tell you You need to keep an eye on the driveshaft and keep it greased I had to clean up the results of one coming apart not pretty! 17afarmer
