Don't understand what you mean by the clutch not releasing, do you mean the machine will not stop when you push the lever forward or do mean that you are having trouble getting into gear,if the latter the clutch brake may need adjusting, you are following the correct procedure to adjust the clutch,it should be adjusted so it snaps in,put the symptoms you are having in your reply.

AJ, sounds like the disc & plate are seized up in there or something seized so it won,t release.

the reason you don't feel much spring tension, is the lever is not compressing springs in a pressure plate like a normal foot operated clutch does. It should get tight and snap over center, locking the pressure plate onto the clutch disk so it turns with the flywheel and pressure plate.

When you push the lever forward, it should snap back out and allow the clutch disk to slip again. The clutch brake should stop the transmission input shaft when the clutch lever is pushed on forward from the released position.

You may have to let it down off the blocks and push on something in one of the higher gears to slip the clutch and get it shined up. You can hold or tie both the steering clutches back to stop the tractor from moving off when you start it up in the gear you want to run in.

Be careful.

Ccjersey It Never Really Snaps Over Center Like You Would Think It Should And Theere Are A Lot Of Threads On The Adj Ring Showing Does This Mean The Disk Is Worn Out Or The Disk Is Stuck The Housing Had A Considerable Amount Water In It When I Got The Machine But There Is No Rust And Everything Moves Easy Ie; The Adj Ring Etc. From the Service Manual:
If difficulty is encountered adjusting the flywheel clutch, check the adjustment of the interlock control rod and the clutch control rod.

As a note, the transmission brake on the 42a is the brake band type, not the coupling type that many are familiar with.

Now that the clutch brake is out of the equation and your problem is the clutch will not disengage when you put the lever forward, was the machine working ok before this problem arose or was it parked for a long peroid,if parked for a long period it maybe that the top section of metallic parts that are not submerged in oil have aquired some rust and is not letting go as it should,I have come across similar problems before on machines in everyday use when the friction disc had broken up and one piece getting jammed between the disc and the flywheel,so you need to make sure its not an adjustment issue before you start the job of removing the clutch assembly,if the machine was parked for years it could be a rust issue but if this arose while you were working it odds on its not a sticking problem, when disengaged have you tried holding it on the brakes, put it in high gear start it up and see if you can hold it on the brakes,if you can slip it for a time or better still work the machine and it may free out,if its the friction disc broke up there is nothing for it but remove the unit,it has to come out in one piece.

Yes, as AJ mentions, what is the working history of the tractor. These units have the double disc and driving plate type wet clutch that is quite rugged. If all the adjustments are correct and you are still having engagement/disengagement problems could very well be that the operating hours have finally caught up with this machine. The oil type clutches are much more sensitive to wear as there are many pins, ramps, rollers and close tolerance parts that make up the throw mechanism, all of which operates on a very short stroke.
