951 63K Restoration - undercarriage repairs

Following the completion of my 9U restoration (still a few minor items to finish: tool box, spark plug guards & conduits, heel rests & instrument panel guages), I've finally found some free time to devote to my 1970 951A 63K series traxcavator (purchased December 2005).

I removed the track guards to investigate wire seen protruding behind around both sprockets.

On the RH side, the high tensile fencing wire has become trapped inside the outer face of the sprocket and the hub, plus the recoil spring rod assembly is broken by the grease fitting.

On the LH side, wire has become trapped on the inside face of the sprocket, plus there is only 1 bolt and 1 dowel in place connecting the hub bearing onto the track frame, plus 2 bolts are loose on the solid equaliser spring connection onto the track frame.

The LH hub is very loose, so it's a good job I decided to check out the wire before going too far. Luckily the bellows seals still appear to be holding as there is nno sign of any oil leaking from the final drives.

Never seen any model of the 951 with bellow seals, all I have worked on had duo cone, the track frames were a problem on them esp the ones in the demo business, always breaking loose and the bolts breaking when you tried to remove them, the final drives were weak and failed a couple of times to a set of tracks, the loader frame would break away from the backend housing taking a lump of the casing with it,we made a special plate that bolted under the counter weight and was bolted in turn to the loader frame to hold it,that was a good fix that would not be noticed, very willing machine but alas one never see them any more.

AJ,

Sorry, I must have bellows seals inprinted in my mind, I meant to say duo cone seals.

Thanks, David

Hi David,
Must say you certainly seem to have an affinity for the really "beat" machines:)

OM,

It does seem like that sometime, but I can't complain about the 951A, as I got it for a very good price, especially considering it is equiped with a Cat No 4 ripper and a 4 in 1 multi purpose bucket.

Once I get the undercarriage sorted out, it should be a good machine.

The hinged battery cover door was missing, but I have managed to get hold of a replacement without too much trouble.

Hi there David,
Hope things are going well with the winch, the firm has been busy as of late.
Today I removed a track and frame and stripped down a final drive on a D8H 68A 2108 What a job! the only benifit is that it was not raining for a change. Every bolt was solid, even the washers were dogs to get off. All the time I have had the owner on my back, I felt like Long John Silver with the parrot on my shoulder. Anyway I had the better of him as I kept him working till nearly 8pm. So I think he will sleep well tonight. I hear that the Welland Steam Show has been cancelled, So it would seem this year has been a total wash out for all jolly boys outings.

Speak to you soon

Hello Tony and David, the Welland rally has been re arranged for the end of September, Been to a few washouts this year, its been a disaster for the people in the Gloucester area and Oxford. Ithink they should screw the developers fo building on flood plains and the lack of stream cleaning by the water companies. You don't see a dragling on silt removing these days.
