I got an est. to do my brakes and steering adj. from a shop. They said $2,200 labor and parts extra.Does that sound right? Bigger ? is it worth it? D2 5U #12884

Sounds like a quote the local cat dealer would give around here. $100.00 hour, including travel time, plus 2.75 per mile. I had a problem with a starter on a new machine (warranty) and cat came out to look at it. They told me nothing was wrong with it, and left. I got a 1200.00 bill from them telling me nothing was wrong with the starter. However, two days later, the starter caught on fire and they voided the invoice. Parts and labor to remove an injector and replace was nearly $9,000.00. however it was covered by warranty too.

Are they adjusting the brakes, or relining them?

they told me thatthe brakes were rusted.very possible,cat sat in the weather late winter into mid spring. I had it running but steering clutchs were really bad too much play. Had abig 4x4 tractor pull andcould'nt do anything. putcleaner in did what man. said,no luck.I had it taken in and here we are. the farmers around here say these guys are fair,butI'm a carp. not a mec.Has anyone had adj. and brakes broke loose? And what about relined? thanks Al

Well I would say that "fair" or not, that kind of price would cause most of us to stop and consider a bit.

do you have brakes locked or no brakes? Will it drive straight? Easy? Hard? Not at all? In a circle only?

When you say you did what the manual says, what was that? Adjusted brakes? steering clutches? washed housings out with solvent (kerosene or diesel)?

Unfortunately, aside from a traxcavator model, the D2 steering clutches and brake repairs will involve more disassembly than most of the other Cat tractors. The tracks and final drives will have be removed to access the steering clutch drums where on the larger tractors, the clutches can be pulled out the top (+ the bevel gear shaft in the case of the D4's)
