1957 D2 Gear/Clutch Question

Hello,

I've really enjoyed reading everyones posts. I bought my 1957 D2 over a year ago and been having a blast fixing it up and putting it to light work around the house. What a great hobby.

While pushing a load of dirt up on a incline I would use 1st gear then reverse back down then repeat back to 1st. But going from 1st to reverse the gear locked up in 5th (?) even though the selector is physically between 2nd and reverse.

(selector panel looks like this) X= where the selector is at.

2 1 3
X
R 5 4

The gear selector is frozen in that postion. I looked in the clutch area and tried moving the clutch wheel and it seems to be locked. When I try moving the wheel you can feel the tracks wanting to move, meaning it's stuck in gear (5th). I can tell it's in 5th when I drove it back to my garage area.

Has anyone had a problem like this?

Thanks,

57D2

When there's wear on the end of the shifter or in the shift rails inside the transmission, you can get the stick out of sync with the rails or even jammed in two gears at once if you are unlucky.

Remove the shifter quadrant, stick and boot and you should be able to take a bar or large screwdriver and shift the rails all back to neutral. If the wear is on the shifter rails, you will have to go deeper, but commonly the end of the shifter stick is worn off on the corners a bit and can slip out of the rail notch before the rail has moved far enough to return the transmission to neutral. Once it's out, it is usually impossible to get it to go back in without opening it up.

Careful shifting can minimize this happening, but it usually does reoccur once the wear is there. Shift straight forward and backward until it is in neutral, no diagonal motion.:D

I have built up on the end of the stick of a heavy truck, but the weld wasn't as hard as needed to prevent rapid wear when the truck was in everyday use, so we ended up replacing the stick and that helped stop most of it.

Nice job on the tractor!

Had the same problem with my 5J, was able to use a large screwdriver thru the oil fill cap. Move the middle one back towards the seat, or opposite of 5th nesting spot if I recall correctly.

I tried what you mentioned and it worked great. The CAT is back up and running.

Thanks
