Oil Leak on 17 A was created by ali sleiman
Gentlmen,
I now have the 17 A running
I have noticed a oil leak that run on top of the clutch housing down the side of the big engine on the side on the pony motor

I can not see where it is coming from. it is not coming from the top plate on the clutch
Any idea

:)

You,ll have to clean off or steam clean off the area where the leak is and try and get a little more info. as to where it,s coming from.Is it coming from higher up maybe from the back of the diesel and running down to the clutch housing so this is why you need to try and pin point it a little better to just know where the leak is coming from.

Thank you . I have cleaned the machine , in fact all the floor board plate are off and pressure washed everything . As I observed , the leak seem to be coming from the top part of the clutch housing , and not from the inspection plate. Very curious leak

The only other thing I could think of too OM is if the bell housing to the engine block gasket is leaking as the clutch & flywheel would throw the oil around inside of the housing. That would take some labor to change it if that,s the problem.

Hi SJ,
If he had said the leak was coming from between the bellhousing and engine I would agree there could be a gasket problem. Maybe something is getting lost in the description.

SJ , Old magnet

I wish I can describe the problem better .
What I see is little oil running down the side of the big engine next to the clutch housing. I am like you all I dont see any there unless there is a gasket somewhere in the housing that leaks once the pressure in clutch or the oil get moving around

If the oil is coming out of the joint between the engine and the bell housing and not above it then it is the engine to bell housing gasket seal that is leaking. Either the gasket #2H9325 is damaged or the bolting may be loose.

Giving it is the gasket , How would one get to it to tighten the bolts of course I dont have any plans at this time to take out the engine or the clutch.
The Diesel engine really runs great I have dont a lot or repairs on the frame , like the support spring , recoil spring , adjustster and many other item that required attention. Next week I will start painting the tractor we have chance for warmer wearther down in alabama. I have few item to weld like the seat dowel , floor board metal. I have fleco canopy on it now , also have D7E style canopy that I like to install on it

Ali,
If you can identify the exact spot along the gasket line that is seeping, AND it is just that single spot, you can take a thin wedge of soft wood and drive in that area to calk the joint. I have successfully done this to larger farm tractors along the split line between the engine and clutch/transmission housing. In that case, the bolts were external and were tight, there was apparently a gasket tear that needed sealer before the tractor was reassembled.

If bolts on the 17A are loose, then you may have to remove clutch or at least take off top cover to see if you can find another way to access the bolt heads holding the clutch housing to the back of the engine.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
