Converting a DW 20 to direct electric start????

Hello all, so I’ve got a pretty serious issue with the clutch and bendix housing on my DW 20, 21C sn.

The bell housing is already drilled for a starter on the right hand side. I’ve been looking at the parts book and it doesn’t show any starter attachment.

Any ideas what the best starter would be???

Thanks in advance

Bruce P.

I don't have much direct start info for the DW20.
I believe Old-Iron-Habit has a 85Exxxx series DW21 which is a DES model, also D337 engine. Maybe he can check out his starter and advise.

I suspect you will want to use the Delco 50MT starter with RH helical drive with 12 tooth pinion. Not sure if the drive end housing would be the same as D4,D6 conversion type with the rotated throat to mate with the flywheel or standard SAE type 3.

It would help if you remove the cover plate where the starter goes and measure from the face of the flywheel housing to the flywheel ring gear. Should measure 2" to meet SAE specs.

I have one with a big old starter from the factory. It is only direct start though so I am almost sure it is on the left of the machine. Probably a 50MT Delco, but this one has an inertia drive vs the more common shift solenoid. I can get a look tomorrow. It has been a while since it ran. May have to cut some brush!

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Thanks, I will get a measurement on that flywheel. It seems like a starter would be the way to go on this one.

CORRECTION!!!! That's 2" from flange face to ring gear.

I was involved in rebuilding a a75 ton Brownhoist RR wrecking crane with a Cat D337 F power ,it was rebuilt by Finning in 1989 for 25000,it has maybe 50 hrs on it since It was retired in 1992.It was donated to the RR museum here in Squamish, sad to see the old girl rusting away

Old inertia drive starter there. Would want to change that out for a later solenoid operated drive if there is a drive end housing that works.

Ok measured today and it’s 2” from face to flywheel. Also took the cover to my 9U and the cover fits perfectly over the studs. So I’m guessing it’s a standard hole.

Now the question, since I’m starting from scratch, is 12 or 24 volts more desirable? All my trucks use 12 volt batteries hooked in parallel, so I see no reason the 20 can’t be as well.

Any other issues to take into consideration??

Thanks

BP

Looks like the standard SAE nose drive end housing will work.
Are you expecting to add glow plugs? That may determine the voltage you will need.
