Need Excavation Advice

Last summer/fall I ran out of time and only got 2/3 done with a ~1 acre pond.

Here is what teh pond looks like now: usera.imagecave.com/bhaal/Ponds-4-6-2008/

The water is about 14 ft deep. I calculate the pond has 2.32 million gallons of water in it right now.

I need to pump this out before I continue excavation. I only have a 3" trash pump that can do 16,000 GPH. I'm looking at 145 hours of pumping.

That's just not realistic.

Is there any kind of pump I could hook up to my D6C or something?

Not that that would save me on fuel, but time.

With my trash pump I'm looking at about $300 to pump this out...

Any ideas?

How about digging the last section of the pond without pumping out the part that is done, then breaking the walls and letting the water into the new section?

Too dangerous with the sand loam soil I have?

If you have a downhill spot for the water to go -set up a siphon and let it go.If your pond is already in the low spot ,I doubt you will pump it unless you use it for irragation -or truck it away.Looks like you already have your pond

I have a place where the water can go, but not enough elevation change for a siphon...

I'd have to use a trash pump of some kind.

I guess my best bet is the land-bridge idea. It just might prove to be tricky with the sandy loam I have...

Know anybody with a vintage fire truck? They have big pumps on them!
Or a farmer with Slurry Pits as those pumps are high volume

I can remember dewatering large areas with a noisy air cooled Deutz 8" and a trailer load of well points, one of those larger diesel pumps like what we used on well points would make short work of it.

We utilize any number of pto driven relift irrigation pumps down here in the Delta
10---12" discharge pumps are common place and can pump 3500---5000 gallons/minute with an open discharge.

Also
most of the hose reel type irrigation guns have a 1000+/- gallon/minute pump with them. They are high pressure pumps and don't pump the volume that the low lift open discharge pumps do
but you might check around and find one up your way. Would make short work out of your 1 acre pond.

Glad to see you are still working on your project----determination will finally get you to the end. Stick with it.

Good luck----

Move the water rather than dig wet or trying to leave a dam them break through. $300 is cheap for moving 2-3 million gallons. I would rent a 6" pump, empty it in 3-4 days. If you want to utilize your pump, set it up with a 55 gal fuel tank. Make sure you check oil twice a day, and let it run all night. 7-10 days you should have it down. Pump curves are reduce drasticly when run through discharge hoses. Pipe is better.-glen

I thought about setting up the pump and let it run overnight. I just can't trust that no one would come along & mess with it.

I have a lot of trespassing problems...

I won't start pumping it until after the rainy spring season. So maybe mid to end of May.

By then the water level should go down a bit if it's hot & dry...

I agree, that I do not want to dig wet. Can't see what I'm doing, and managing soupy spoils with the dump truck I have is not really an option...
