Hi timbo,
Main engine crankshafts are forged steel.

Frank Fox
The Sacramento source for crank welding, hard plating and grinding as well as hydraulic cylinder and rod work is Chrome Craft.

I don't know if they are in to small engines.

Thanks all for your input. I'm headed to PA sunday, to meet with machine shop Monday morning. I hope to getcrank done and back in my hands by the end of the week. Great bulletin board. My goal is to have D2 completed and run before the HCEA show in Brownsville in Aug.

If the company has a good process it works quite well, where it fails is in the heat affected zone if it doesnt bond well to the base material. Its important that the base material is identified and even though its a crank it might be wise to make sure that it is de-gassed before spray welding it. De-gassing involves taking the crank up to about 500 degrees F and basically burning out the impurities that have been soaked up by the crank over the years. We have used this process in oilfield applications and when done right it works well.
