I'm changing all the fluids in my D2 project and have came to the govener and the pony engagement housing. I have drained the oil but don't see any fill plugs and don't have any referance to the type of oil to use. Can I get a lube chart that is avaible? Thanks, Jim

The starter pinion has a little plug on the little front cover of it so remove it and that flat plate on the top of the housing remove it and pour the oil in till it comes out that front cover hole where you took the plug out. The gov. housing has that larger plug on the side of the housing below the fuel lines and pumps so if you removed the plug in the bottom plate and drained the oil then fill the housing up till it,s full where you took that larger plug out. You use just crankcase oil like you use in the engine in both of them.

SJ,
On the 5J series, if the governor housing won't hold oil. Is the seal or seals/gaskets between it and the engine available or even replaceable?
Thanks!

Yes there should be a lip seal there in the front of the inj. housing and drive shaft for it that controls the oil so I don,t have a parts book to give you the number but someone on here should be able to help with it.

Don't forget to change the two fuel chamber seals, one between filter tower and pump housing, other between the pump housing and governor while you are in there. pt # 8B4967

I've been to busy to reply earlier, so pardon the late post. I realized that the fill plug for the govenor was on the injector pump, on the hour meter housing. I didn't realize that the injector pump and governor shared the same oil. I didn't drain near as much as I put back in. As for the pony engaguement housing, I found three plugs, One below the lever, one on the main transmission housing to the right, and one on the front cover, facing the govenor. I drained each to find that they all drained the same resovior, then filled it about half full. The drain plug facing the govenor is at bottom of the plate. I was wondering if it may have been installed upside down sometime past. In most cases, a fill plug is placed so that it acts as a top off point for oil levels, but did not see one on the housing, where it should seem to be., That is what started My inquery. Are there any other secret oil resoviors that are on the D2-5u Cat? I've done trans, L&R finals, pony crankcase, main crankcase, inj/gov housing, pony clutch housing, serviced air cleaner, radiator and main fuel filters. I can't think of anything else. Thanks again, Jim

drujinin,
Bill Austin just went through the drill of replacing the injector pump drive seal this last weekend. It was found that Cat has substituted some wimpy seal that barely had enough rubber and undersized seal lips for the job. Also the width of the seal housing was about 2/3 of original. The part went back to Cat and was replaced with a CR (now owned by Timken) unit. Be sure to request a double seal unit. I didn't ask if the part number was different but I can find out.

Its been a pet peeve of mine for a long time as my dads 3J always leaked down and my 5J does it also. While its torn down in the shop I'll tackle this issue also!
