A couple years ago I saw a post on here by someone who mentioned this conversion. I never could find any good pics so I'm including mine. I have to say it runs wonderful with this setup. I recently had a valve job done on the pony (7 years sitting in a barnyard with water at the bottom of the seats). While I had it where I could take pics (on the dozer but not hidden by the sheetmetal) I thought I would share them with you guys. I posted a couple about 2 years ago but hadn't hooked the governor up until recently; which I'm not sure really works but I just take great care not to over rev. This is a 28 pica from early VW. The throat matches amazingly well with the top cover. Problem is though, the carb bolt on the left side doesn't. I ran it until recently with lots a thick coat of gasket maker and only one bolt. It never did seal that well so I have since taken a piece of metal (cut from the hanging hardware to my garage door LOL!) as you can see. It works great. Plenty of down pressure. Linkage was reworked from simple stuff in my catch all bolt can. Well hope the purists won't cuss me too much. I stil believe in ponies and wouldn't waste the time to go electric. I like sittin' there with the pony at about 1/3 speed as long as I need for priming this ol' gal etc. But those early carbs were crap. Oh yeah I also piggybacked a plastic lawn mower tank onto the old rusty orig.

:( Why not fix it correctly?
Your friend, Frank

Because Frank I use it on my farm and the (zenith I believe) carb was crap. BTW I had one of the hydraulic cyls. off for repairs and right there on the end of it was a swastika stamped into the good ol' German steel. So should I replace that with something else since the lifelong cat mechanic who bought this gal new in 46 ( at some point changed it over from cable to hyd's) apparently used imported superior steel? Hmmm.... I used a superior carb. Shoot me Frank. ;)

:o I am sorry for the way I posted the reply, I just thought it may have been as easy to fix the old Zenith? I have subsided carbs on a lot of equipment, I used a Zenith off of a 51 Dodge on my Cat RD-6 pony, ran fine but replaced it with the original carb as soon as I got it cleaned out, Air cleaner fit the original carb better then it did the Dodge carb. I also replaced the Zenith with a Rochester on an old Chrysler V-8, it ran much better.
Sorry if I upset you, wasn't my intent.
Frank:)

Replied by denjoe on topic no prob Frank
I guess you've done the same thing then with car parts to dozers:)
I bought my 1st ol cat, a D4 6 yrs ago and found this site shortly thereafter. Since, I've pulled 2 of these old D6's out of the woods with trees growing up thru them and locked up motors. Most recent is a JD 2010 of which I replaced the Diesel with a Gas burner. (Big improvement over the motor that nearly bankrupted JD). Anyway..... I would never have brought those gals back to life without you guys helping and directing me. Thanks for your input Frank.

Thanks Denjoe for the info.

I personally think its better to save a tractor from salvage just because of a simple fix that doesn't destroy the tractor or change it's character, you could always use this fix to bring home a tractor under it's own power then make it original later.

I remember a mechanic from Holt Bros years ago who saved an old Cat gas tractor (15 or 22?) by using a distributor from a VW to replace the missing MAG by rigging up his own coupling that didn't add any new holes or destroy anything else in the process. Years later when he had the $$$ he found a mag and made it original.

With cat pony parts getting harder to come by these days, and many online car part suppliers it's hard for a weekend hobbyist to pass up getting a tractor running cheep. I remember years ago JC Witney having a new carb for like $50. What model of VW is the 28 pica carb used on?

That's great.

It's fun to do stuff like that.

Some of the people of history I honestly
revere were the, "Okies." They repaired and adapted every piece of equipment with whatever they had on hand.

Thanks for sharing.
