Oil Recommendations?

Let me start by suggesting this might be a good candidate for a new sticky thread. I've searched around the site and found some answers, but there doesn't seem to be one place to look, and the recommendation in the CAT manuals for "Superior All Purpose Lubricants" or Army Spec 2-104 isn't terribly illuminating.

So, what oils are recommended in older CAT equipment. Specifically:

Diesel Crankcase Oil
Pony Motor Crankcase Oil
Diesel Airfilter Oil
Pony Motor Airfilter Oil
Pony Motor Clutch Oil
Diesel Fuel Injection Clutch Oil
Transmission Oil
Track Idler Oil
Grader Tandem Drive Oil
Flywheel Clutch Release Bearing Oil

Perhaps there are general rules (use 30 weight here, 90 weight there, etc.), and no doubt there are other things that need oiling that I've missed. It would be excellent if the experts on the board could weight in on which oils to use where, and when, and which to avoid. (For example, I assume I should be avoiding oils with detergents etc.)

I have the same questions, only pertaining to a Cat Ten. What engine oil, transmission oil, and final drive oil. Also wondering what the spark plugs should be gapped at. Thanks

30 wt in both motors/aircleaners, 90wt in gear boxes/finals, hyd in hyd systems, except BG pumps use 30 wt only, then its motor oil in the newer stuff, but the manuels will tell you that, a good grade of greese gun greese, Union Moly's or a Valvoline, not cheap K-Mart slop, lot of people here use 15/40, not a big deal, oil has changed dramiticly over the last 40 years and you can't tell the difference betwen 90 and 30 anymore, strangely enough Auto Zone carries a brand of oil called Coastal, I've been useing it in transmissions and rear ends with no problems and it looks and smells like 90wt from 30 years ago, and cheaper than most of the others, its made by a oil company in Texas that has been in bussiness for many years.

I think Aaron hit most of it as I am one of those that use 15W-40 in the diesel engines on the D47U and 112-3U. I use non detergent oil in the pony and any other place that does not have an oil filter.
For the pony clutch I use 10W and some thin it with ATF so the cluthes do not "bind" together otherwise it is hard to engage the pony without grinding the gears.
For the button head fittings, I use #00 which is recommended for the older rollers and idlers etc. For the clutch shift collar, I use 90W TO with a small rag in the cup to let the oil drip over several hours.

For the 112 I use 90W TO in all the gear boxes and regular Universal trans/hydro oil in the power steering. Electric grease guns were invented for those of us that own old Cat graders. :D

We have used standard tractor hydraulic oil in the BEGE and early cat hydraulic systems for decades. If you only use one set of implements on the older cats and don't use it on newer equipment you can use the orginal oil. But then again a lot of things have changed with oils in the last 60 years.

However if one minute you are moving an implement down the road with a 2008 powershift tractor, then as soon as you get it into the field you connect to a crawler with a BeGe pump you are going to be mixing oil.

Hyd. should use #10 oil if you use motor oil. That was the recommended weight we used at the Cat dealer.I just looked in a Cat hyd. operators manual and it says to use straight #10 oil above 0 (zero) temp.Don,t have the specs for the BG pump.
