Help get R4 running was created by catskill
Posted awhile back about an R4, well I bought it rather then have it go to scrap. Good luck, engine freed up after soaking with penatrent. Now it will run on primer but not on fuel from carb. Removed carb and cleaned, have plenty of fuel to carb. What next? Don' have manual yet with carb settings, that may help. Throttle setting seems to effect its starting, does throttle change ignition timing? Any ideas, suggestions welcome. Triing to get it running to drive onto trailer for trip home. Thanks

When i got my r4 it would run a little then die. It would also start off the spray. I would suggest media or sandblasting out the inside and out. YOu may find some brass nozzles that you wouldn't have seen otherwise. I know i found one in the bottom of the fuel bowl like that. Also remove all the nozzles and make sure that they are clear and blow out passages with air or carb cleaner. You may also want to check the level of the float and make sure that it isn't sitting to low starving the engine of fuel. Normally when the engine is cold i will set the throttle to 3/4 to start with full choke. Usually it starts right up. As far as the idle screw adjustments I think you can start out with about 1 1/2 turns out and go from there. Also have you checked the fuel pump to make sure it is working? Post a picture i would be interested in seeing what yours looks like.

My R-4 would start and run bad. Engine was stuck but freed up easy. Took valve cover off and found stuck valve. Turned valve and it freed up. Mine also likes 3/4 throttle. Crank twice with choke closed and the third crank its running.-glen

Thanks for info forgot to mention fuel dripping from bottom of fuel pump, have fuel to carb don't know about pressure. Will it run with just gravity feed? At this point was just tring to get it on a trailer its in a hard spot to get at with my tandem to pull onto trailer, didn't want to haul another machine there just to pull out of woods. Was going to try to pull with my pickup next trip. It's a WW II dozer cable blade and rear winch 1942. Under what is left of the cat yellow is red (highway dept?) then OD. Thanks again.
