For what s/n tractor? For front mount #46 Hydraulic Control the s/n is on a tag located on the left hand rear face of the Hydraulic Control tank assembly.

Hello OM
The tractor serial number is 15A1254. I found the tag but it was on the top of the hydraulic tank. Maybe this is not a complete Cat hydraulic system. The hydraulic cylinders and mounts are Cat but the tank is in a blister on the front of the tractor. I will know more when I can take the front guard off to access the tag. I can see it but it is covered in crud and cant be read

Regards

Phil

I used a screwdriver through the perforated plate to gently clean some of the crud off the tag and as best I can read it says 79E71. Below the serial are the words "Hydraulic Control" and a heap of numbers that are barely legible. So I am guessing that this is not a Cat hydraulic control.

Hello brian18a
Thanks for the info. From what I have read the 8 is for D8 and the 3 is for number of valves. Nobody seems to know what the 1 is for.
Typing "Cat 183 Hydraulic Control" into ebay search and all the manuals show the oil tank and control valve mounted on the fenders. This machine has a front mounted oil tank and valve in the bubble shown in the pics and has a completely separate hydraulic system for the rippers. I can't tell if it has more than one valve. I also can't tell if it is the same tank as the fender mounted version.
Obviously this is a home made design not a Cat design and I don't know why they put the tank on the front. To fit it there they had to move the trunion mounts for the C-frame about 3 feet forward so it would clear it. This caused increased load on the idlers. They also removed the springs and replaced them with a solid block. This resulted in cracked chassis rails.
Do you know where I would find a manual for the UK built system?

Hi Team,
a Cat Of Australia Service Letter (April 16/1968) Equivalent Serial Number cross-reference I have here says that the UK built 79E1-up 183 Hyd. control is same as the US built 36E18-up.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

There in lies the problem, the 36E1-up Hydraulic control was meant for the early 36A/46A D8. Comes in one, two, or three valve configuration and yes, it is front mounted like you have.
Form # for the 36E1-8992 parts book is UE033987 and covers the 176 & 183 Hydraulic Controls.

Thanks Eddie and Old Magnet. I found a manual on ebay with the UE033987 and will order it tonight.

Another quick question about another D8 (SN 15A2287) with a front CCU. The CCU's serial plate is unreadable. If I remove the plate, is the serial stamped under it like the chassis and engine?

I'm not sure on the stamping, I kind of think not.
If it's factory period correct it will be either a #30 CCU, with a 54C s/n (early) or a 27E (late) with the 27E most likely.
Here's a couple of pictures of a 27E...
