Diesel engine RPM measurement

I have a D2 5U that needs the diesel engine low idle and high end RPM adjusted. Historically, I have set the RPMs by sound, but I want to set them more precisely.
I would appreciate any thoughts on the best way to measure the engine RPMs on such vintage tractors?

Use a non-contact tach. I have a Harbor freight one for about $40 that works well. Place a piece of reflective tape on the crank pulley and easy to use.

an optical tachometer is the way to go. not expensive either. the hardest bit is to get the reflective tape to stay on

Thanks for the advice.
I picked up a laser tachometer from Harbor Freight ($40) and it worked perfectly... Should have purchased one fifty years ago LOL!

You'd need Marty McFly's DeLorean to pull that one off! : )
