Cat D4 7J-21 was created by jappelget
Hello Everyone-

I am helping a friend of mine look for information on his new project. It is a Cat D4 Serial number 7J-21. The machine is equipped with a D4400 engine. He is looking for any manuals/literature on this tractor. He is particularly looking for information on the injection pump as it has some issues. The pony motor on this machine is in very bad shape. Looking for information on what pony motor was on this originally, and what models of pony motor would work on this machine? Is there more than one model that would bolt on? Any input is appreciated.

Thank You,

Joe

There is no problem finding manuals for this tractor, either watching ebay or reprints from: www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=90800&x=7

Specific information on fuel injection pumps is a little harder to come by as Cat kept that info close. What questions do you have on the pumps?

Any of the D2/D4 basic pony blocks will interchange.....just have to match it up with the right bolt on accessories to fit the individual tractors.

Most if nopt all the D2 & D4 starting engines will fit but on the early ones the coolant outlet was different so the top cover from the early starting enine will have to e installed on a later top cover as they used an elbow line and there possibly will be a couple other things to swap. The heads on later ones had the spark plugs in the enter of the head where the early ones like the 7J are near the top of the head but that won,t make a difference for spark plug wiring. If the engine is the early one then use the heads from the early one but not sure if the later heads will work on early engines as it,s been so long since I worked on them but someone here might know.I have the pump lifter settings here if you need them.In fact it,s 1.734" on TDC for the correct cyl on the firing stroke and the firing order is 1-3-4-2 and valves are .012" cold or .010 hot.
