30W transmission/drive train oil, like Cat uses in steering clutch compartments.

Negative on transmission / drive train oil. Steering clutch compartments of 7U tractors are dry.
Crankcase Lubricating Oil to meet Cat specifications is used in the oil clutch.
Information from manual shown above.

I occasionally wonder about TDTO in the dry steering clutch compartments on D2s and such. I think that topic has been discussed before but am curious if anyone has tried it, and whether it's worth a try. My steering clutches (5U) are new and use the sintered bronze plates and given TDTO is intended to not defeat friction in clutches, I wonder how it would affect the throwout bearing - thoughts?

Cheers,
Neil

I was refering to oil used in newer tractors that have wet clutches. Back then all they had was 30W engine oil

I believe Cat had a oil clutch update for the master clutch on the 6u and 7u tractors. I don't know when or if it would be in many of the operators books. Or was it a after market thing even. Just know a friend was very happy to find a 7u long track with oil master clutch. But he and tractor are long gone, so I cannot look at it.

No idea what oil was called for. The D6 of that time period calls for the same oil as used in the engine.

Hi Team,
originally Crankcase Oil was the recommended oil for Master Clutches and Steering Clutches if applicable--now with all the super slippery additives in Engine Oil we should use TDTO4 (Transmission Drive Train Oil) so the clutch is less likely to slip even when adjusted correctly.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
