When this crappy weather gets better I will have a good look at it. It looks that it has three adjusting screws, will take the side cover off and see whats there. Bill butt said that he never adjusted it.I think he bumpstarted it when needed
.Will let you know what I find.
Cheers

Hello Catsilver and Old Magnet
Had a chance to have a look at it this morning,It seems to me that the linkage needs adjusting.I operated the lever from outside the cab,it moved an extra 1/4 inch and engauged.Started up the engine and disengauged on the diesel fireing up.
What I don't get is the set up of adjusting the clutch. It appears different to what everyone describes and old Magnets book drawings.I wonder, as this was one of the last 933's built it was modified in some way.
I think I will remove the linkages, clean up the threads and take up any wear.
What do you think?I asked one of our ACMOC Cat boys.he was baffled. The only way to make adjustments is through the top cover or the linkage .See above photo.

Hi Martyn, I remember seeing your 933 parked on a slope behind Bill's house with the loader arms on the support pins, maybe that tells you something!
If the clutch does snap in properly, adjust the linkage to take out the effects of wear, it could last years before needing attention.

Hello Catsilver
The donkey start was the reason Beacon plant sold it to Bill, When I first saw the machine at Bills place it took us a couple of hours to sort the donkey engine mag and fuel system.Bill bumpstarted it with a wheeled tractor.
I have now sorted the donkey engine,it starts great now.I had to make up a new exhaust when I first got it as it was in bits.I will take up the slack in the linkage.
This machine will be featured in Classic plant in Oct/Nov issue. Pete Vicary had a good look at the machine at the ACMOC AGM in 2006.held at Finning LLantrisant. If you are at that depot come and see us,we are only a mile up the road
Will be at Bills place on the 14th Sept.
Cheers
Martyn

Hi Martin,
What part doesn't look the same to you other than that pin going through the lever shaft? Rest looks conventional.
If all is functioning ok maybe all it needs is a little linkage adjustment as you say.

Hello Old Magnet
It says in the instructions to remove the side plate,on my machine it don't have one.Even if it had one it would be impossible to adjust it as the casing is nearly touching the side frame.Even the linkage is different.Very strange.I can only guess that this late build 933 differs from the normal setup.
I will take up the slack in the linkage and see what happens. Many thanks for your help. Will try to find out,if I can,why this differs from your drawings and the book I have. And differs from advise from our UK ACMOC boys.
Maybe its a one off??
Thanks
Martyn

Martyn,

I remember working on an early 933F with the big side plate but I also remember working on the British Rail 933G's. Is there something else different? I don't know why, but it was about 34 years ago and to my mind the donkey was on the left? Now why should I think that?

Hi Martyn,
That may go back to the D320T engine change that I mentioned at sr. # 6164-up. Maybe they did something different to them if my info is correct:rolleyes:

I don't have any info on the D320T.

I was talking to a good mate of mine,he is a mind of information. He says that at the end of the production run.Caterpillar used up bits off other machines to cut costs. When I worked for British rail in the mid 1970's I can remember BR had 933 and 951 machines.all were fitted with a side tip bucket. The last machine was cut up last year,it was kept just up the line from Bristol Temple Meads station.
A brand new side tip bucket is at a yard in Herefordshire, the owner health is very poor so we can't have a good look at it.
