Just found a Service Magazine article :- Aug 24 1950 about improved piston Relief Valves.
Scans below from Yellow Father on this update

Thanks for the information. It seems the non- spring one is the newer style. I will put the cylinder together and try it out. I will have the older style one in the other lift cylinder hope they work well together

Assembly: when putting piston on rod, first the washer, then the o ring? This does not look correct to me, but according to the marks from before this is the right sequence

yes i belive that would be correct the washer is to spread the load the oring is the seal. now is there a washer for the other side of piston.
the best is to find a parts digram for the model of ram you have.

but that makes sense to me for the washer, then oring seal, then piston. generally if it came apart that way it should go back that way and it was working admittedly not well but a broken piston will do that.

As said above the washer first, then the "O" Ring followed by the piston and then the outer washer and finally the nut.
The washers spread the load as said but, also retain the relief valve seats should they loosen.

From my old computer is a scan of the Parts for a D7 blade lift cyl. which shows the location of the "O"Ring seal, albeit not very clearly.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

i think i mentioned cleaning the lines with foam plugs and compressed air. there should be a filter in the tank find it and replace it, run it for a while then drain the oil and fit another one just to make sure you have removed as much debris as practical the oil should be okay to reuse just pour it through a coffee filter paper.
