Newbie D4 7U lube questions.

If I could chime in, I have a question regarding roller grease. I don't have one of the old hand lube cans for track roller grease. Over the years on my old D4 and now the D2, I just have always used a good quality 3% moly #2 grease for the rollers, since I have it available for the general farm machinery. I grease the rollers pretty much every time I use the machine. I realize the general recommendation is 00 cornhead grease, which isn't so available. For a low speed bushing type bearing like the rollers, I would think the moly grease would be suitable. It seems it would fill the cavity and provide constant lubrication for the bushings and stay in the rollers. I'm assuming the seals on the roller seals are not perfect. Since I grease it so frequently, I'm just wondering why this wouldn't provide as good a lubrication as less viscous grease contained by effective seals?

I would think the 00 grade grease would be able to work in tighter clearance areas--I had no trouble ordering a 5 gallon bucket of it---I hope you are using a pressure relief valve on your grease gun as a high pressure may blow out your seals

Those Cat rollers rely on the lube being able to flow out to reach the bronze bushes and keep flowing, I definitely would not use regular grease.

If corn head grease is not available, use 000 if available, otherwise I'd suggest making a flowable grease with some heavy oil mixing with some 00 grease, or just use the heaviest oil you can find, that's what I use in my old Cats that don't do a lot of work, a very heavy gear lube.

My chainsaw lube is very thick and sticky, and I was thinking of using that as a lube, though I'm unsure if it would be suitable for the bronze bearings, some oils will attack the bronze, but that lube is cheap to buy here in Australia, about $US45 for 20 litres, and I think it might be perfect.

I've bought the 00 grease from Wal-Mart several times.

i buy the corn head grease in tubes like regular grease comes in and use a regular grease gun with a hose that has a button head tip. works great . you shouldn;t have any problems getting it at any dealership that sells farm tractors. i do usually just order it by the case from my local automotive store though.

your local fuel distributor will be able to help you as all the major oil companies have harvester spindle lubes were as the local auto parts joint will have to special order it.

i use ngli2 moly grease and dont have a issue as the hot climate im in melts the oil from the grease the point to remember is most of the grease points need only one shot of grease and my gun is a pistol grip set for volume not preasure and i grease it about every second run or so depends on the amount of work.

heavy chain and bar would be fine aslong as it is not zinc fortified be aware it will attract dust and dirt as it has tackifiers in it. and be sure its mineral oil not the synthetic or bio oil rubbish that is used in europe.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments. I like the idea of using a lower pressure pistol type grease gun to limit the pressure. I'll look around for some cornhead grease.

This is the bypass coupling that will help prevent over pressuring the seals with the volume compressor. Alemite/ Stewart- Warner Corporation.
