Question on 9K steering

That's the same style of power assisted steering as fitted to Australian built early 12E 21F series graders, cant say I ever tried to steer without motor running. Would it be possible to jack up the front, get the tyres off the ground and see if you can turn the steering without the weight on them?

Fantastic idea, thanks.
If Hyd lines weren't so damnedable expensive I'd Tee off the 8T and run two lines back and tie into the 9K .... LOL
that would probably be three time the price of a wrecker.

Hi, Fat Dan.
Try towing it with the decompressor locked out and the transmission in gear. This MAY give you enough hydraulic flow to help out. It would also allow you to use the lean wheels to help in the turns. Pick a fairly low gear to get the engine turning faster.

On one job back home, I had to road a grader anything up to 25 miles on bush tracks for some jobs. I used to steer using the lean wheels ONLY for a lot of that travelling just for chuckles.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi, Fat Dan.
- 8 deg. F.? I have walked on snow ONCE in my life, on a tour through the Rocky Mountains National Park with a friend back in 2015. ONCE was ENUFF.

In my younger days. I put my hand up to go down to Antarctica for a year - didn't get to go - I like to think I'm a little smarter now.

Just my 0.02.

Well then I have to tell you about Ice worms. They only live in glacial ice in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia at subzero wether and in fact melt at 40°F (4.4°C)   Do ice worms exist?

Hi Team,
the pictured cylindrical booster is a Rivinius type gearotor type booster.
Boost flow/pressure supplied by an Automotive style Power Steering Pump driven via the Power Control Box drive shaft via a Vee belt from a Rivinius supplied attachment pulley sandwiched into the PCB drive line all mounted under the cab floor with the oil reservoir tank mounted in front of the cab.

Scans below should help. I used to fit these when still an Apprentice at the Dealer back in to mid 1960's
Recently resurrected  one for a mate on his 212.
With a running engine the Rivinius unit will not turn the steer wheels when the grader is stationary but as soon as the machine moves it is one finger effort to turn the steering wheel.
I believe you should be able to dead engine steer a moving machine with difficulty as is normal for a non-power boosted unit with some added hydraulic drag as also you cannot get the assist of wheel lean to ease the effort.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi FD,
thinking about this some more maybe try looping the lines to/from the booster to re-circulate the oil in the booster unit only.
If towing with the engine turning on de-comp. if going forwards use a Forward gear if going reverse use a Reverse gear or you will blow oil out of the air cleaner and starve the engine of lube oil.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Last night I was running the 9K steering conundrum through my head...
under the cab is a V-belt driven hyd pump to supply pressure from the reserve tank to the steering booster.
pull the V-belt and drive the pump via an external 12v electric motor or battery operated drill motor,
I also have an electric over hyd pump off a pickup snow plow ... pull the lines from the booster (loop together or Tee from the hyd lines from 9K belt driven pump) and replace the lines from the snowplow pump ... affix a switch and when you turn the 9K flip the snowplow pump on for that period of time to conserve on battery life..
Thoughts?

the 9K i used to have had the exact set up in the pic. it would steer fine without the hydraulic assist functioning. you can help by over inflating the front tires but it shouldn't be all that much trouble. a little forward movement makes a world of difference. if your kingpins are frozen jack up the front and steer back and forth while greasing with a gun full of oil instead of grease.
