Bolt on's?

I never felt a D2 was a nice ride any way you looked at one. Tailseats were always rough and "cruisers" at least had a bit of backrest and cushion. Still ROUGH RIDE!

I took this picture today, got home and realized I should have looked closer.
Grousers have been built up at some time, can see the weld bead.
What am I not seeing? It really looks wrong!

Good eye gentleman, those are homemade bolt on grousers, it has flat shoes from the factory which have provisions to bolt on grousers, which I don't have, I needed more bite than the flat shoes for pulling trees, going through mud, snow and hooking to a pull sled, this d2 is a late model which has a longer chassis, also has the longer 5 roller undercarriage and larger front idler which translates to 37 shoes per side. I mimicked standard grousers which are as best as I can tell 1 3/4" tall, 3/4" wide at the base and 3/8" wide at the tip, I can't realistically taper them, so I used 5/8" wide steel bar stock material that is 1 3/4" tall. this was an experiment so I did every other shoe which still required over 37' of steel at a time when prices are all over the place. worked well enough that I will be doing the rest when I can stand the financial investment, as it digs really well with every other shoe but is rough on hard surfaces as the links roll over the rollers. I actually like the setup because I can remove them all in less than an hour and then can track over grass and maneuver without unintended excavation but they are terrible at self cleaning, the mud packs in the square corners and doesn't fall out. D2gary, I think I bought a PTO from you, it's not on the back yet. Ctsnowfighter, you are correct, snow buildup in the track chains can break stuff, I machined a template to make cutouts on the shoes but need to borrow a plasma cutter yet, but there is about 100 different types of snow and this is cold temperature tight granulated snow that did not pack up at all, warmer today so that is a different story now.

Sixty Tracks -
Next time someone is at the Woodland Ag Museum, they can look closer.  Give us a report back.
The Pin end of the links should be to the front, Leading direction of travel.   Pads could be either way depending upon the bolt pattern.

Yes - it would not be the first time tracks were put on "backwards".

Hi, Folks.
The early Best Sixtys and probably the early Caterpillar Sixtys had the grousers at the REAR edge of the plate. I don't have a 'HYOOOOGE' reference library like some folks do and so I don't have the date or the serial # of the changeover but the later machines switched to having the grousers at the leading edge of the plates.

The top photo is of a Caterpillar Thirty (I think) while the 2 lower photos are of Best Sixtys.

So, depending on when this changeover happened, those plates may 'ackshully' be CORRECT.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Not certain what is considered 'Antique' at this point but I'll chime in with my recent addition to my arsenal. A '60 D6b Ser # 44A1053

I rather thought if it's not as old as I am than I am the antique.  Pretty certain we'd be better off without pics of me.

I thought I recognized those photos - broken recoil spring and steering issues.
