I bought a no 12 grader that the previous owner bought for parts from a friend and it is supposed to have a good pony and diesel engine. Besides checking the fluids, stuck fuel rack, is there anything particular to the D318 engine i should check?

ive had a couple D2’s and D4’s but none with the D318 engine.

if everything looks ok ill try to start with the pony motor; if not i may try to pull start it.

Thanks Michael

Hi Micheal,
If your D4 is a 6u or 7u they have a D315 engine, the D318 is only two more cylinders
So the same would apply to the d4.

You can also make shore that the engine turns over buy hand buy operating the decompression lever and give it a few turns over and feel for any abnormal signs.

use a borescope to check the manifolds for obstructions or damage. especially if the exhuasts havent been covered.
see if it turns freely

After all of the above. Then, If you can get the pony running, Turn the diesel over without compression and see if you get oil pressure.

For the pilot motor,i would change the oil as it only uses 1 litre because the old oil will be contaminated. This is cheap insurance and you know the oil is good.
