I have the operators manual, but there has to be a more in depth technical manual. You know, like the old Chilton manuals.

What years are inter-changeable with mine?

The Cat service manual is called a serviceman's reference book. Any 9U will be similar to yours, but the manual will need to cover your SN or say 8U - UP and 9U - UP which includes all SNs.

8U is basically the same tractor, just 60" track guage instead of 74" on the 9U.

I also have a "offbrand" service book, can't remember the name on it. I will look and post.

lol I shoulda known when you said mesquite & cactus forest....:D

I like the way your cab is built to protect the operator. My 9U don't have a brush cab on it yet. I have all the pipe and corners, just hadn't gotrdone yet. I need to, I am hardheaded, but not that much.....

Did you find your tractor close to Mineral Wells?

You also want to be on the lookout for the "Servicemens Reference Book" for the 4-1/2 in. bore 6-cylinder Diesel Engine. Form # 30238-3. It has the beef on the main and pony engine

Actually 4 miles from my property. I got it for $5k. Hopefully it was a good deal. If not, don't tell me as I like feeling like I got a good deal ;) . I have the other brush gaurd but have not re-attached it yet. Will get that done soon.

My intial purpose for buying the machine was strictly to clear my place (see below photos of the overgrowth). I had several "local" people look at it and quote it. The best anyone came back with was $250 per acre  . That's just under $10k for what I wanted done. Knowing the previous owner and what was wrong with it (left final drive leaking) I thought if I could get my property done and even if I never got a dime for it, it was half what someone else would have charged and I had it done the way I wanted.

Now that I have it and have about 15 hours on it, I love this thing. People complain about how complex these old machines are to run but I really enjoy it. It's like your sitting there engineering all of the time  .

I changed all of the fluids and filters when I bought it. It still has a little blue smoke at low idle, but nothing that concerns me at this point. It would not turn in reverse when pulling the left controls when I purchased it. The previous owner thought something was going out. Guess what! I tightened the brakes and it turns just fine  .

Anyhow, I would like to restore it when I am done with my place, but the sheetmetal (hood/grill) is pretty beaten.

Jason,

I wouldn't sweat the 5K. I gave 4K for mine then paid $450 to get it hauled up here. Then I have bought a set of tracks for it, changed all the fluids, rebuilt the hyd pump drive, replaced 2 hyd hoses, rebuilt the bearing housing mounts on both trackframes, removed the pony and plated the openings, and the list goes on.

But.......I have a old Catskinner buddy here who buys and sells old cats and he recently had a really nice early model D6 9U and he sold it for $13,500, so I still feel ok about mine.

I love this ole machine too. It continues to amaze me at what it will push.

Take care,
