MAG proublem was created by mr pigg
Been working on 1954 cat 112 grader. I got the pony moter running useing a battery / coil system and now it quit fireing. I took the mag completely apart and found that previous fingers had put too long a screw in that holds the points and the fiber gear has been rubbing it and it no longer stays put on the roter shaft. I think I could jb weld it back in place if I knew the correct position it is suppost to in . The fiber gear has a {A} on it and the drive gear has a red mark on it but where is the lobes on the shaft that open the points suppost to be in relation to the [A] on the fiber gear I would sure appericate any info on how the timeing marks line up or any other advice on the mag.

Hi Richard,
I assume that the gear is not able to drive the points cam. If so to locate the correct position for future instalation you will need this data as well as that supplied by OM. This data is for a MJK Am. Bosch maggie, but holds true for any magneto in that the points open just after the point of maximum flux--resistance felt as the rotor cuts through the magnetic lines of force, if I remember correctly, this is vital to give max. spark potential.
By experimenting you will be able to reset the gear to the cam with the A in the window and the points opening position set to where needed to satisfy the Edge Distance Setting. I set all my mags this way, be they Cat or other, with good results.
This is pretty techo stuff for the uninitiated but worth a try to save the gear and shaft. Only other way is to eyeball another one and reset yours accordingly. Sorry I do not have a pic similar to OM's incase I could have scaned it clearer. Maybe if OM scaned just the pic you might get close for position.
Hope this helps and not confuses,
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for your info, with it I was able to get the mag fireing in the right place and the pony moter runs again. All the parts are back on the moter so maybe today will be the day we see if the old cat will bellow again.
Thanks
Richard
