Pond Excavation, again...

More

Well, it's time to start working on the pond again, the one I was not able to complete last year.

I made a ramp down into the pond to get my 225 in there. My D6C seemed to float ok, and the 225 should be ok as long as I don't turn. Problem is my tandem dump will never make it in and out of that hole; there is still quite a "waterbed effect" down in there.

I could safely get my dump halfway down the ramp probably...

I have an oval, with access to one side of it basically, should I excavate the side I can get to, to the depth I want, and let the water run to that side, and then try to make access to the other side (the one that is currently wet & very mushy)?

Any advice is appreciated...

I'm guessing ,the 225 is a backhoe. Reach out as far as you can and still be on solid and stable ground and start digging to the depth that you want. How much deeper do you want to go? Swing around and dump where the D6 and another operator can get behind it and push it up and out. Keep working toward your ramp and in front of it and to the other side. I think you will have a big head ache with dump trk.If you can reach out to the water and release it into newly dug area, you would be ok. The other side will take time to dry out if it don't fill up. How long did it take to get that water in it and how deep was the water. catskinner

Leave your dump truck at home. There is no reason for a dump truck to be on that site beings as you have a dozer and an excavator. You'll just be burning up clutches and breaking log chains pulling it out.

Build yourself a hard, level road out as far as you can with the dozer, then take the excavator out and start digging, throwing the spoils behind you and to the side of your road. You may have to double or triple throw it to get it to a point where the dozer can get behind to push, but that will give you a chance to fix the road that you are sitting on and digging as you are backing out. Always keep the excavator level, very important. I guess if you built the road halfway from each direction you wouldn't have to throw it as far.

That doesn't look as bad as it did last year. If I was bidding on it I would say two easy days.

Ok, here is what the site looked like in April/May: (Ignore the date stamp of the pictures, my camera was screwed up)

usera.imagecave.com/whitedwarf4/Spring_2007/

The pond lost about 2 ft of water as it got warm & dry out, as seen in these pics usera.imagecave.com/whitedwarf3/Drying/ . There is no clay lining yet so the sandy loam on the banks was soaking it up.

I pumped every day after work last week to get the rest of the water out. The pond was about 5ft deep last week...

The actual depth from grade is about 8 ft, I need to go another 8ft or so. 15ft is when I hit a layer of shale that carries the ground water.

Ok, how level do I need to keep the 225? That road is at about 10 DEG, is that level enough?

As far as making a hard road, I simply do not have the material on site for that... The top soil is 7.5 ft deep, then it's clay to about 12 ft, then it's shale & glacial till stuff, as seen here www.flickr.com/photos/etd66ss/33031478/ . The red clay starts at 7.5ft, the the gray from about 9-12ft. All I have to make a ramp at this point is very soft sandy loam...

That red pile of stuff in some of the pics would be good for a road base, but don't hit that until ~15 ft down, so could not make a better ramp until I dig some of that up.

I figure if I can get as close to the center of the pond with the 225 as possible, reach and start digging, I can come back from the other side where that pile is now, and finish it off with another ramp from that side once the water moves...

Can someone please give me a number on how far I can reach with my 225? (educated guess will do)

It's probably in my manuals at home, but don't have them here at work, and wanted to mull over during lunch the procedure I want to use to try to finish this pond...

22ft comes to mind for some reason...

EDIT:

I assumed 30ft from the center of swing...

The orange outline is what I think I can get staying on the ramp... The yellow oval is where I need to get to...

Hi ETD66SS,
this scan is from my 8th edition Perf. Hand Book for 225 powered by 3208/3304 engines. Hope it helps and is readable. Distance will vary with different bucket/tooth combinations but not markedly.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Great thanks!

Not sure what stick I have though...

Well first day I ran the 225 hard.

Found that the "crowd cylinder?" is leaking pretty good out of the packing/seal.

I also noticed that a full load of wet clay, and the machine is real slow to lift it up...

Here's a couple pics:
