It might not count for much but the decal looks like an H, not a K. It looks like it has a horizontal bar extending from the left vertical stroke. JM, you didn't get a shot of the serial #! : ) You know we all like that data.

Which part is the counter-weight on it? It doesn't seem to have a weight like the SA tractors have

Guys, I let all of you down on these photos!
First chance I get, I will take serial tag pictures, etc.
All of you made good points; the Ks I’ve seen had a horizontal exhaust;
As for ATI, correct as well. They had plenty of iron laying around to build one from scratch if needed most likely; this could be one of their hybrids.
The counterweight is integral with the bottom of the radiator( a bit of the lower bulge?)
Perhaps it is a spacer plated D8H as well; Previous owner had another matching unit as well.
Standing by either tractor, there is such a noticeable size difference for sure.
No worries, I’m not in the market for an 8 of any series. Not this week anyways!

I had the pleasure of running one of Glen Ghilloti's D8 14As while he was driving his 48a, what a difference, that 48 was a monster!

She looks like a modified D8H to me.
It looks like it has the compact fuel pump which came out in the later D8H's and the spin on filters.
Looks like it's been fitted with an earlier turbo arrangement by the location of the exhaust pipe.
The track frames are D8H as there are only 6 bolts holes for the trunnion mount. The hydraulic tank looks to be D8K.
Nice straight tractor though.

Cheers djcat

TomTrack, Are you sure you aren't thinking of Glen's 49A D-9? He didn't own a 46A D-8 that I ever knew of while at the SM tractor show. He had a couple of 36A's though and a few 14A's too.

Gee, it sure looks like a H model D-8 to me.

D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Spoke to my friend: states that it was built during transition of H to K for what it’s worth. Didn’t get clarification as to what badge it really wears via the serial number tag. Basically a high hp gear drive CAT!!!
I still want to post photo of serial number when I get back there. Thanks. JM

Very interesting! I am fairly new to this game and had no idea there were even direct drive D8s after the 36A. Never had heard of a 76V here in British Columbia.

On another note, Mrs. Mangoman went for a hike by herself the other day. Let's say my affection for old iron is completely lost on her. She had to drive a way up a logging road and she she came home she told me she saw a D8K. I nearly fell over in disbelief that she took note :faint::confused2::heh::heh:

I downioaded the photo and enlarged it 400%, it's definitely a D8H. Btw, that's a good quality photo that let me enlarge it so much and stay clear.
