Huber Road Roller with Caterpillar engine

More

Hi all
I have just acquired a 1940s Huber 8 ton three wheel road roller
It has a Caterpillar engine, it appears to be as good as identical to a D3400 D2 engine.
I have many a question to ask about it.
The engine has a serial number tag with 1T7806SP, would anyone have any records of industrial application engines that this serial number might show up on?
Would it be appropriate to use 10W30 CAT engine oil for the crankcase and injection pump? Im in the UK so as is well known the climate always seems to be changing.
What might the SP feature be for the engine? I know there are various different SP features on the crawlers but what might it be in the engine? Uprated Horse power?
I am unsure of what weight oil to use in the gear box and final drives etc, I have contemplated 50 weight gear oil as thats what we use commonly at work on the modern cat equipment but i know its not always a good idea to compare with todays technology. Maybe something heavier like a 80 or 90 weight?
i am sure i will have more questions to ask in the future
Many thanks to all in advance
Sam

1T7XXX is just listed as D3400 engine, the SP could be many different things.

The SP on the serial no. Is normally "special parts" so could be lift pump or governor modifications or it could be different flywheel to take an an automotive style clutch, there are a few of those rollers in th UK, I think they were brought over to help build the airfields in the Second World War

dont use zinc containing oils in this old stuff as the bronze gears and bushings dont like it and will be come chemically pitted. i personally use caltex textrans tdh (which is made for tractors and cane harvesters) it is a 75w-80 oil meets caterpillar TO-4 specs) in the gearbox and hydraulics of my d4 and torque fluid 454 in the final drives there is 434 for different temp range these are zinc free and safe for bronze gears. ask you preffered oil company tech service for advice or the equivalent to these oils.

i also use delo gold ultra 15w-40 in the engine.

That's neat 4sure, i like seeing powerunits in old original equipment like that. Looks like the main clutch might not dis-engaged by the looks of that fuel tank on the front??.

1Txxxx s/n's started with 1T7001 in 1942 and were only produced until 1945. What kind of main clutch and throttle does it use. Governor looks like it might be set up for foot throttle, possibly foot clutch also. I'd stick closer to original lubes. Straight 30 wt or even 40 wt detergent in the engine and 85-90 gear oil in gear train. By chance is there a worm gear involved with the finals?

it has a hand throttle with an identical hand throttle assembly as a d2, also a hand clutch.
i had never seen a Huber roller let alone one with a cat engine before i saw this one so i really don't know much about the roller side of it.
desperately after some manuals for the roller though

Hi,

I just did a search on eBay (UK) for Huber roller manual, I found quite a few manuals, just a question of knowing which model it is that you have I guess.
