More about the Killefer Disc.
This was bought new by my friends grandpa in 1949. He had the date when it was delivered right down to the time of day. We have the original book for it as well, and it has a nice exploded view with part numbers and how to operate. We have a right turn bar for a John Deere two cylinder tractor that I really don't want to butcher up because I have a G and A Deere too. The scrapers can be made and I have several patterns left but I thought I would try the easy button first and see if one might exist. As for the overall condition, the front gangs are in need of some blades, I think the sitting around on the ground is not good for the blades, they break when you start using them. I think that's why the two scrapers are MIA, someone removed the scraper because it was catching a broken blade and stopping the whole gang from turning. All the right turn stuff is there and the trip stuff too, the return springs are all broke and rusted. As it has been torn down, the frame has bushings that are replaceable where the bars connect and hinge, it needs new bushings made but most discs just have a bolt in the hole, very well built! We found the chain that is a twisted link chain and has the sheet metal piece that you can adjust it to the proper length. The bad is the hitch is slightly tweaked from rough handling. I think it will make a good match for my D2 and a good piece of equipment to have around.

The owners manual you have would be a nice addition to the library if you would scan it and send to gauntjoh. Thanks

So you are looking for what was called a turn bar ( in my part of the world anyway) to bolt to the tractor drawbar. I would guess most of them out in the wild, are just more old iron to those that have them.

Does anybody know if Cat made them. Were they blacksmith made? Did the maker of the disc supply them? Were they a California or west coast only thing. All the weighty questions of the world.

I know some were farmer made but this was the 70's and they were already way past there time, by then.

Keep us informed. T think I know of a Cat 22 that had one, to at least get you a pattern from. But it has been 10 or 15 years since I have seen the 22, so who knows.

Here is a picture of the turn bar that bolts to the draw bar support on a D2. The material is 1'' thick and 3'' wide.

Can somebody explain the purpose of the turn bar and explain how it works? Were they made for larger machines also? (D4, D6)

The turning bar is attached to a chain, which is connected to a trip lever on the disk; to close the disk, one turns to the opposite turning direction of normal travel, which puts tension on the chain, causing the trip lever to disengage the disk, forcing it to close, allowing you to make a "wrong" turn. In so many words. I will post a photo in a minute of one from my 4U.
I have seen only on smaller machines such as D2 and under, but no reason why it would not bolt onto a larger machine. Keep in mind, the disk itself has to have the mechanism to open/close itself. JM

so killefer is a brand of drag offsets.

if they used the square axleshafts those bearing are still available through most bearing suppliers. just take a old one with you. provided they havent spun in the housing there easy enough to replace. the cast iron spacer bells are also still available.
