Hi Team,
as the Trans magnetic screens are clogged so might be the T/Div. scavenge pump screen in the bottom of the flywheel/T/Div. housing and be why the T/Div area is full of oil.

George in later days there was a big upgrade of the Trans/Steering Pump suction lines, screens and filter system on most sized machines.
Prior to this to get the bottom suction screens out of the early machines you had to drop the trans oil--sometimes driving steeply nose up you could get away with only dropping some oil--now you can service them from above as you found.

The old style screens and their oil lines used to have oil leakage and air sucking in loose heat hardened hose connections etc. issues.
We await your screen crud pictures to see if it is linings or rags or ???

Hi George,
no worries Mate,
the scan below, from my 1965 Cat Powershift Transmission School notes, and is representative of the Scav. Screen housing on powershift machines of the day.

The screen is on the inside of the small red arrowed housing in the bottom rear face of the Flywheel/Torque Divider housing.
Remove that small housing that is retained by the some 5 or 6, 3/8" dia., 9/16'' head bolts and check for a restricted screen
NOTE, if you have had the engine running and the flywheel housing is full of oil it may be HOT.
If the housing is full of oil then this would answer the slow starter motor cranking issue you seemed to me to have early on.

First drain the flywheel housing and check if it is over full as per instructions for checking for a failed scavenge pump given previously--be ready for excessive volume of oil if scav. pump is failed and/or the screen is clogged.

Ok finally got to taking off the filter next to the scavenge pump... Was not clogged at all like the one under the seat.... Again my book shows that to be the magnetic strainer for scavenge pump... Again that was clogged...

So When I drained it meaning took the 5 bolts out to get to the filter. I lost maybe 3-4 gallons... Clearly, all the extra oil is not going into my torque converter... And that would make me believe there is no major rear main seal leak....

A couple of things I thought of...

1. First I checked my breather tube for my engine. Looks like it does not have the extension tube as that is missing... And I took out the element filter and that appears to be okay of course not clogged at all...(Oil Breather)

2. I am not sure but need to verify that the correct oil dipstick is in place to check engine oil level... Part # 4S8441

3. And secondly was there ever an option for the d9g d353 engines to have a larger oil pan for some applications...

4. I will be dropping my transmission fluid to check for water. If there is water in the transmission then it came from the engine and thus I have a problem with a seal... The only thing I can grasp from what I have seen is that the scavenger pump magnetic screen was beyond clogged and vented back into the oil vent from the fill port on top of the transmission into the torque converter.... I would expect with the excess oil that the leak would be going into the TC and it is clearly not....


Not in the radiator, not in the gas, and not blowing crazy black smoke...

Oh by the way the final drives... Checked the filters and they where clean as a whistle looked brand new...

For #3, as well as checking the part number, also get a comparable measurement from another machine, just in case the one you have is not the correct length

Thanks Neil,

Anybody have an idea on their D9g dipstick and what their part # on the dipstick says? I dont have another one to compare it to...Thanks in advance

I wouldn't use the water in the oil reasoning. Sitting for that many years it is bound to have some water from condensation in the trans oil.

After, taking out the screen on the Torque Converter located just below the scavenge pump I noticed a drip coming from the flywheel where it mounts to the engine...

This picture is taken looking through where the scavenge pump filter housing would be attached...

A previous post stated it could be the scavenge pump seal put in backwards but I think the picture tells the story... It looks like when they put in the crank they didn't put in a new seal or did not install it properly.... Let me what you think... When following the leak it is coming from the engine Side and leaking through the flywheel down into the TC

What I just dont get is that this color is different then my engine oil when looking at it from the dipstick... It appears black and this appears grey in color....??????

Needless to say this is a slow leak it appears coming from the engine but might be a major leak when the engine is under pressure when it is running... What do you guys think... I would think that the scavenger pump would pick it up and transfer it to the transmission... Not good... It looks like I will need to drop the belly pan for the T/C. and follow the steps in the service bulletin for T/C removal...

It also looks like that flywheel is coming off while I am at it and make it correct... All is not lost... Let me know your thoughts...

You have the correct dip stick. The scavenge pump suction strainer is not a magnetic strainer. Take a look at the flow diagram on page 22B-30 Group 43 Page 1 in your Service Manual. The scavenge pump is a two section pump, 31 gpm scavenge and 21 gpm recirculation. Scavenge flow goes to transmission lubrication and on to the steering clutch compartment. Recirculation flow goes to the torque converter and the TC outlet relief valve and on to the magnetic strainer ahead of the transmission oil cooler.
3-4 gallons in the converter housing just means the scavenge/recirculation pump is keeping up with whatever is being recirculated along with any leakage from the TC and possibly leakage from the engine. Doesn't mean your not getting leakage from the engine.
