That cab! no cutting edge on the blade! shows what kind of work they do.

Well today I drained the transmission and steering clutches... It was pretty old from appearance and grey in color. It appeared to have some water how much who Knows I would think little but present...

The spec is 36 gallons what weight and manufacturer would you use?

The leak on the center flywheel showed in previous picture stopped... Not sure but it might mean that the pump had pressure on it and was releasing pressure... Not sure... I am going to put fresh in her and start her back up.

That rear seal is not exposed to direct pump pressure but would see journal leakage and splash at the rear main.

I need to know what is the correct transmission fluid to put back in? It is 36 gallons so I don’t want to mess up buying the wrong stuff. Someone said put in 30 weight oil and some said 50 weight but again not sure.

30W will be just fine. In the 70's we used engine oil but now use 30w transmission drive train oil or TDTO from Cat, but any brand supplier you choose.

Replied by edb on topic Lube Orifice
Hi George,
since you found the grey trans oil now we know why you had the grey oil coming from the torque converter housing/flywheel drive spline area.
There is an oil lube orifice in the front of the Torque Divider Shaft that lubes both the shaft pilot bearing, the Toque Divider and the drive splines when in operation. The oil trapped in the T/C after shutoff can continue to leak out for some time after.

Use 30 weight Transmission Drive Train Oil (TDTO)--the engine oils specified in the grey OMI at the time your machine was built was suitable, BUT, engine oils now contain more slippery additives and cause clutch slippage and sometimes in heavy work failure of the disc lining materials from overheating due to the slippage.
Steering brakes are likely not as effective either.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks Eddie,

I appreciate the explanation and will follow suite...

I believe it was stated that the oil leakage was coming from the engine side of the flywheel. Not the torque converter side.

Replied by edb on topic Two Oil Leak Questions
Hi OM,
indeed there was a question about the engine oil stain that is often seen with the piston ring type crank seal system--answered by others.

There have been many questions on this thread and it can be hard for us all --me included especially--to keep track of every one asked.

My answer was relating to a grey oil leak question--with picture-- at the T/C housing drive splines in the flywheel.

I did err in my answer to this as I in error described the orifice lube as applied to smaller T/C's without a T/Div.

In fact the Torque Divider is lubed down the T/Div centre shaft by pressure oil from within the T/C via drillings in the shaft and also supplies splined T/C flywheel coupling lube and the shaft pilot bearing.
Oil will leak until it reaches the T/Div. shaft lube drilling level.
After some searching I have found a scan relating to T/Div lubrication in which can be seen the lube passages including an orifice as I described.

Best Regards,
Eddie B.

OK, that describes one of the observed flows/leaks but the bigger concern was the disappearance of a large quantity of engine oil (assuming the information was correct). Guess we'll find out when the unit is fired up again.

Replied by edb on topic Engine Oil Loss
Hi OM,
yes indeed, I have no explanation or experience of such reported large volume of oil loss from the engine--leaking lip seals in pumps, or piston ring seals for the crank usually take some time to transfer large volumes oil--I guess unless they are missing ???

Can only think machine was not level when the oil was refilled and checked--not sure now if the engine oil was filled by volume or dip stick checks--I feel there could be some cloud over George's explanations for some issues reported.
Now he has the machine home I think these issues need to be re-checked so as to rule out any possible observation errors.
Its easy to do a re-test and then formulate a plan of attack for any issues found to be still evident.
Would be hesitant to go ripping things apart yet without positive proof--my thoughts.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
