At one time you stated the transmission oil was black just like your engine oil???? Just going by the info you give us.

To be honest OM that was before the dozer started up... When the dozer started up things got churned up and mixed... The engine oil looks good and you can see it is fresh... The transmission oil was grey and looked horrible... Like I said in a previous text it appeared to have some water in it... I just need to refill the Transmission housing with new and proper spec... I am off to locate TO-4 and will not put in anything but the correct spec as I dont need any further damage to machine by putting in the wrong stuff... I understand engine oil 30w is wrong as it will cause slips on clutches ect... I understand the reason why with back in the 70 vs today different additives.... Thanks and will keep you updated as to progress....

Yes--but why not use what Cat recommends? I found a Philips 66 oil equivalent to the Cat T0 4 spec

Agreed it’s just so damn expensive here on island looking at $930.00 cat brand and Phillips at $830.00 it is to-4 specs

Crazy but which would you go with? Definitely doesn’t matter at this point!

Is Chevron or Shell available as an option. Any that make spec would be fine.
Are you looking at drum price?

-yes agreed, rather expensive....that's why i suggested 5w-30 as a cheaper alternative until you get things sorted...

- i prefer oils that have the API donut on the label....usually gas have something like a SL, SN certification....diesel oils are C something...thinking like CI...etc...

-some people think oils have gotten better over the years....some think not...discussing Oil, lubes, additives, yadda yadda...it's a slippery slope;)

No to Shell or Chevron availability... Only Phillips 66 or Caterpillar... Both of course are TO-4

That is a 5 gallon price for 7...

Crazy prices here...

Replied by catskinner on topic D9G no start
Hello George,
Have followed this post from the beginning and congratulations on getting her running. I disagree with your idea of a flapper on exhaust, as the wind will blow them up. At least a bucket will stay on and is better than NO bucket at all and water goes right down the exhaust pipe.
You have mentioned that the Cat was sitting in a "Pit". What was it doing there and could you explain this a bit? What kind of pit and was it digging it? You do know that the engine needs to be warmed up real good, working for a hour and then checking oil level would be good. I checked my dozer at noon when I stopped for lunch and at the end of the day before I shut it off. What will you be using it for now when you get her going? catskinner
