Hello George,
Have followed this post from the beginning and congratulations on getting her running. I disagree with your idea of a flapper on exhaust, as the wind will blow them up. At least a bucket will stay on and is better than NO bucket at all and water goes right down the exhaust pipe.
You have mentioned that the Cat was sitting in a "Pit". What was it doing there and could you explain this a bit? What kind of pit and was it digging it? You do know that the engine needs to be warmed up real good, working for a hour and then checking oil level would be good. I checked my dozer at noon when I stopped for lunch and at the end of the day before I shut it off. What will you be using it for now when you get her going? catskinner

That is a long story and to be honest not my business regarding the previous owner... It was not digging in a pit... It was moved to where it would be hard very hard to recover...

I will use it to doze my driveway and house pad here in Hawaii... I have 27 acres and a couple other lots 3 acres that needs some attention... Thank you for the advice when it comes to the dozers oil.. Yes I will check after she is good and warm....

Anybody have the part number for the gasket for the scavenger pump filter gasket. If you recall this was the last part I removed and I replaced the metal filter but cannot find the gasket part number.

In addition I removed of course the two plugs 1. Plug to drain the torque converter and 2. the transmission plug... Both do not have any brass crush washers. I guess we just use teflon tape??? At what this oil costs I can't afford to lose any and want to make sure everything is back together correctly...

Of course I talk with my local cat dealer and they are clueless and my parts book I can't find it in...

Sorry I dont have a parts book for the 9 but yes there should be copper washers for the plugs, I'm sure they are available, maybe Mag has the numbers.

Gasket for the scavenge suction filter cover is a 4M5943
All the large drain and filler plugs use a 0L1124 gasket.

"I knew what the drain plug gasket number was right off the top of my head, but I was thinking the small plugs" " My clutch must be be slipping again"

Replied by gvanhouten on topic Head gasket leaking oil
Hi team,

Yesterday I put the old girl back to work. It was a little side job and helped my neighbor. It seems the transmission is running very very good... Oil appears to be steady at the correct levels... And the transmission color looks good nice and clear.... I will probably change it the transmission oil and the main engine oil very soon as I want to make sure there are zero containments....

So I pressure washed and degreased the hell out of the machine... I did this to find any leaks of course... It appears the head gasket is leaking and just seeping... Nothing crazy but I still don't like it.... I think the only thing I am going to do is to re- torque the head bolts... I will look in my service manual for torque sequence and torque specs... It is an even leak across the whole head... Knowing these guys the previous mechanics they sucked.....

I have a couple cylinders that need to be repacked... One ripper cylinder is just pissing hydraulic fluid out.... I never did repack but need to desperately. Seems the lift for the blade and the ripper are very slow to respond.... Any ideas on what to look for???? Already checked filters and cleaned and put back in... I dont want to run with it leaking like a pig....

I can tell you this she is strong and man can she push some dirt.... I took down a bunch of very tall trees and she didn't even see them meaning it is effortless for her... My D7G takes them down but can struggle... Huge difference in size and performance... I am a novice but man the 2 machines are the way to go... The 9 just puts them down and the 7 now is better for a final grade... But to track the 9 hands down is a beast... I am very very excited and all this crazy has paid off... My neighbor can't believe it him and his wife watch in awe as I moved and dozed his land... I am just working on 2 acres at best.... So crazy small area.... Let me know your thoughts on head gasket ect....

Not much else you can do but re-torque the heads. If you do remove the heads be sure to use this stuff on both sides of the head gaskets.

Thanks old magnet... Can someone explain to me why we check engine oil on low idle? I understand the transmission but not engine oil... It clearly is very high when the machine is off but when it is running it is within specs for full....

Thank you...
