***Yes Neil, his look pristine compared to anything we have had apart here. Many of us are curious about your own D 2 project(s). Yours has been a labor of love. JM

Are you going to sand blast the inside of those drums? Yeh, they look very nice as far as wear.

Thanks Side seat, I'll try wirebrushing them before sand blasting. I just don't have a particularly good sandblasting setup that's all.

It sure has Juiceman. I get busy on it then the work drops off as I focus on other things. Where I currently am at with the 5U is putting the track frames back together, and I have new D3 rollers for it. I'm now debating whether to put series 1 D3 sprockets on it along with the appropriate rails since it seems the price would be not much different, at least the last time I looked. A new set of Berco D2 rails would be simpler of course. The 3J engine has been sitting in my garage for years - the cylinder head has been refurbished (new valves, guides, seats, and a surfacing) and I have a new set of liners for it (can't remember if I have pistons and rings) while the rear end is sitting out in the pasture. Inertia on those projects is endemic around here : ) My buddy with the D4 Traxcavator is pushing me to finish the 5U at least because he wants to clean out his pond and since I told him he is guaranteed to get stuck, we need something else to help pull it out : ) I'll need more than the current slicks that are on the 5U to get any grip though that's for sure. I think I'm going to farm that welding out so it actually gets done

Cheers,
Neil

I pulled the RHS main bevel gear cap and had a look at the bearing cup this morning. It does have some very light pitting. What are everyone's thoughts? Go ahead and change them out?

Mark -
in my opinion - if you have doubts about a bearing - change it! If it fails - what are the consequences - most likely not ones that are easy or in-expensive to fix.
That does not count the time and effort to get to them.
Sometimes we get away with things and other times we say - WHY DID I SKIP THAT - I WAS THERE!
Only you can ultimately make that decision!

Yes, change them! Those seals are old also.

Yes change them - after oil, replacing bearings is the next best maintenance item. Bearings are cheap compared to catastrophic failure

Hi Markds3,

For the cost of a bearing or seal, yes, I would change them, i belive in doing the job once. If you put it back together as it is, you will not be happy with it and you know you in the back of your mind you should have changed it when you had it apart.

So a big YES

Regards

Daryl
