Replied by dewets on topic Joining or re-joining ACMOC.
For me, the exchange rate between the US$ and our South African Rand is the deciding factor.

I do not have a Cat in my backyard, but grew up with them, and have a great affinity for the Old Highway Yellow coloured beasts.

Being retired now, and on a fixed income, the annual ACMOC membership dues is just too much for me to justify, so therefore, I sadly have no option but to take my leave from ACMOC BB.

I do wish the club and its members well for the future.

ACMOC antique caterpillar machinery owners CLUB complete with local chapters local members who donate their time to be officers people that help each other out restoring antique vintage machinery and take them to Local and national shows to be around other like-minded people with the interest in vintage machinery. The forum is part of the club and yes it’s a club

I understand this, but I think a lot of people who are registered users on the forums are just that, forum users. They take no part in all of that other physical stuff that costs $$$. The vast majority of people on these forums are non-members and it will likely stay that way I think. If I as a non-member want to help out another non-member within the new framework, it will likely be more effective to tell them to hop on over to heavyequipmentforums.com or the like and start a thread there, as data exchange can occur freely.

I guess this brings up another question I had. Will non-members be able to put links in their posts? View links in others' posts? Because if the answer is yes, this is probably how many will circumvent the new rules of no attachments. Just use links to imgur or Google Drive as opposed to actually uploading attachments.

There have been several other antique Cat websites over the years that people have went to after they have decided to leave this one. All but one has failed and the one that is left is a site that is invite only and pay to use. It takes a critical mass of people to make a web forum work and that has been one of the failings of the other antique Cat websites is that they never established that critical mass. Why should I go and visit a website that only has one or two posts a month? There is one or two people on here who are quest members that share enough information that I would be willing to pay their memberships to keep that information flowing. I visit most weekdays and might look at one or two posts a day. Most posts I could careless about because they deal with machines later that I collect. I do not post often because most of the time someone else has shared the correct information, if I do not like the information I will post. I also visit one website daily that is a pay to use anything beyond viewing website. I do not pay on that site because reading is good enough for me on that site.
Thanks
Ken

I've been on here for 14 years, and now all of a sudden I won't be able to see attachments, because, money... Just doesn't sit well is all.

You have a distinctive signature. I will be sure to NOT impart any advice in the future to your questions.

I ran a heavy shop with many cats for 20 years. I enjoy helping out on the board if it is a subject I know. I bought an old 12 to repair my dirt roads and shortly after was offered another older 12 to rescue it from the scrappers. Garlic Pete (first member I met) helped me load it and bring it home on his Low Boy at no cost. Since then I have sold ( to cover my costs) or given much of that machine away. Many others here have helped me get and keep my old 12 running with parts at their cost or free. I enjoy this exchange of information and help.
Is there a place on the site to see if your dues have been paid? I am getting old and forgetful. I just noticed I am a guest member.

dewets,

Your situation is understandable and hits everyone who lives outside of the USA. We do consider exchange rates when we make decisions on club business. Understand that much of the current bulletin board will remain as it is now. You will still be able to post, give advice or just make conversations. I encourage you to stay onboard and give it a try before you make your decision to leave us altogether. Staying as a "Registered User" will remain free to those users.

Example:

My property tax is an average $10.00 per day for the year
The use of the BB along with all other features cost me $0.11 per day
I get way more for my money here for $0.11 per day then i ever will for my property tax!!!!
This new direction for having a fee for the use of the BB is not a new idea, people have been discussing this for 8+ years and its about time that it has been implemented.
I am sure most of the ones choosing not to sign up would not think twice about buying a manual for $40.00, after all working on Caterpillars is anything but cheap, we do it because we love it.

You get out of life only what you put into it, so to each his/her own.

Hi oldbeek,

If you have paid your club dues, you should show up as "ACMOC Member" here on the BB. We DO have problems sometimes with this antiquated BB (that is another reason for the new upgrade) where it does not properly show BB member status. I have to ask you to call Mary at 309-691-5002 or drop her an email at "This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it." and I know she will take good care of you.

It is a surprise so many ACMOC members don't use the BB.
It will smack the for sale section pretty hard so I guess lots of pm requests for pics.

I would rather pay OM's dues as mine.....

If I see club members having access to info I want or need, which the time will come, then it is available. At a reasonable price.
