Stuck In Hawaii D9G Still Wont start!!! Bad Injection Pump????

If upon testing injectors for a good spray and getting fuel then I have a nagging feeling from earlier comments that the previous owner said it was always a difficult starter after an engine overhaul, does this tractor have an injection timing issue, not knowing the extent of the overhaul etc, I am starting to think injection timing might be very retarded, way after TDC. Failing that a valve camshaft timing issue, though I tend to think not.

If the go gas is making it knock a lot I believe there is sufficient compression to heat the air to ignite it, thus my feeling is somehow the injection timing is all up the spout. Not being familiar with D9's I don't know where or how it could be made to be so far out.

Just a mad rambling thought. Wombat

. That is why I said, if you get a good spray pattern, Then adjust the individual pump timing settings. Doesn't need to be to far retarded to be a hard starter. Person that previously sent the pumps may have used the wrong demension and they are all injecting late. The old owner said it was always a hard starter.

If a person was not familiar with the timing pin procedure for timing the pump it could be set anywhere as the coupling is not indexed between the auxiliary drive and the intermediate pump shaft and relies on a clamped coupling once timing to #1 cylinder is established. The pump to intermediate shaft connection is a splined coupling.

Hey George,

I have been following your "problem" for quite a while. I am NOT any kind of Cat mechanic (I am a retired Computer Programmer) but as I have been watching the pogress, the thought occurs to me that with what you have spent on many different parts, could it be possible that the same money could be better spent on getting a Cat Mechanic out to "fix" the problem.

Of course I am assuming there is a Cat shop somewhere there. ALSO, I am well aware the you simply might enjoy working on the D9 yourself.

I just wanted to let you know what I am thinking.

UH.....half the mechanics at the dealerships today would not even go near a 50 year old mechanical machine unless they can hook a laptop to it and do diagnostic survey, pre inspection, trouble shoot, hazard situation, cost survey analysis and so on first.

This is so very true. The parts dept couldn't find the parts either.

So true... This is called troubleshooting... And yes it is not easy.... But well worth the wait....I will get back at it tommorow and start updating again...
Trust me I would be in $4,000 plus and caterpillar would still not know what to do with their 50 year old machine however I put my money on the people here....
