Don't worry about the gunk. Get the front piston on engine up and both valves closed, check timing mark on flywheel, turn injection pump so #1 pump is starting to come up. Check if there is marks on the pump gear and drive gear, not sure on the 9's, maybe Mag knows about that or if the service manual shows it.

OM asked, All three of my reference sources says it's a 1970 model.
What are you using as a source? Eighth Edition, Used Construction Equipment, serial number field guide, 1974. catkinner

What I see looks good to me. Get the pump installed and timed. Your service manual has the procedure using the timing pin with #1 (not #6) at TDC.

I've yet to see a s/n source that didn't have errors, especially aftermarket publications.

I see where the service manual states how to time fuel pump to camshaft with TDC 1 of compression stroke.... I will follow it basically states to install remove dowel pin unbolt 3-4 bolt on camshaft insert dowel pin (5) into position 2 remove cover for camshaft find TDC and tighten bolts 3-4 remove down pin and put back... Does that sound about right? I just went off of memory...

Thanks Old Magnet

That's about it, just make sure the dowel pin inserts into the slot in the camshaft flange.
Dowel pin is stored in position 2, installed in position 5 for timing.

Hi,
ensure that when turning the engine in the correct direction of rotation (D of R) to the No1 TDC on Compression stroke that you only come up to TDC in the D of R.
TDC No1 on Compression stroke is when the No1 cylinder valves have clearance and No6 cyl. valves are tight--rocker arms rocking--Exhaust closing and Inlet opening.
If you go past TDC turn engine backwards at lest 60 Deg. and come back to TDC again--this is to remove any slack in the drive gear train.

When we pin timed at The Dealer we used to bring the engine a few degrees before TDC, insert the pin in the pump drive, just tighten the drive coupling the merest amount for a SLIGHT DRAG so you do not chop the end off the timing pin and then bring the engine to TDC, tighten the coupling, and remove pin --may need to turn engine back a bit--go back the 60 Degrees again and come back to TDC again and check the pin holes for alignment--they should be slightly offset in the advanced, Cam hole ever so slightly leading the holes aligning, for best starting and running, IF, the lifter settings are correctly set.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Pony motor compression lever may be gone but that doesn't mean the compression release shaft that runs through the heads is not there. I'd believe the parts manual before I would take Cat's word. Check for yourself.

All I have to say is I was busy today and Old Magnet was absolutely correct... I believe my problem was the compression release shaft... Please check out the video below for confirmation...

In addition I can't seem to find the the flywheel indicator to find TDC on compression stroke to reset the Injection Pump....
