Lash is the adjustable clearance between valve rocker arm and top of the closed valve. When you grab a rocker arm on a closed valve, you can rock it back and forth a little and hear it tick as it impacts the valve stem and the pushrod. Might only be .012" approx 1/2 mms, but you can feel it. Some engines have valves that are set to more than twice those clearances.

Really only the cylinder that is at TDC compression stroke should have BOTH valves closed and rockers loose. Of course there will be other single valves among the cylinders that are closed with loose rockers, but not both on any other cylinder.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Methinks the incredible patience and assistance given here that you (Gavin) should come good and become a financial member of the Club. It is because of the financial members that this Bulletin Board exists and is maintained.

First off my name is George not Gavin since everyone is in a correction mood here on this site... I guess everyone that comes here knows everything and was never taught a damn thing.... I have zero issue with being a paying member as you call it.... But try and show a little tack... Me think you need to remember someone that gave you patience and assistance... Don't get me wrong I am extremely appreciative but it seems that people want to poke jabs at people that are new trying to understand and a hobbiest... I guess everything you touch you fix and never had to figure anything out.... And never made a mistake....

I will continue to make mistakes and work to understand and correct them... Thats called life...And then one day when someone comes on this site I will share wisdom and try and help them out to understand something 50 years old that has limited information on it...

I had to say something with these multiple numerous insulting jabs.... I thank each and everyone of you who has been helpful and patient...

Thank you so much for this detailed outline.... That makes sense and truly appreciate the explanation

There is no doubt your spot on with that Andrew. The "3" is really an "&". Might save some confusion.

I can guarantee that 1,3&6 WILL NOT be up together! unless the crank is broken.

Cheers djcat.

Hey George. It must be frustrating not getting the old girl going. I get that. Most all of us have been there and had a stumper.
From watching the videos I do think you’re close. Very close to getting it going. Hang in there. It’s a wicked steep learning curve but so worth it.

Thank you for taking the time and reaching out... On the flywheel it states TC 136 and I lined that up with the needle... I will look at it tomorrow but I hate to assume it is at TDC if #5 intake and exhaust are fully closed then it would make sense that #1 cylinder is at TC especially since I aligned to that mark but just looked visually at the wrong cylinder. So would what they are calling backlash would that be loose rocker arms?
AGAIN THANK YOU

Valve lash is a term that means the loose clearance that should be set with a feeler gauge. I commend you for trying to take on this task and have come to realize you have very little experience with engines. My all time best mentor in my long career as a mechanic said " a man that does not know the answer and is to proud to ask a question is a fool" As a self taught mechanic that started in a diesel shop at 13, I have asked a lot of questions over the last 65 years. You are doing fine.
