LCM, Check your local NAPA store for that button head adapter fitting. To make sure ya get the right one, take one of the fittings out and take it with ya when ya go.

"but what about the pressure? couldn't it blow the seals?"

There are no seals on your button head lubed bearings. They're supposed to be 'over lubed' (push dirt, etc. on out) ~every 10 hours.

Replied by edb on topic Oil Pressure
Hi LCM,
your machine uses a 6B2355 gauge by my parts book.

Scanned below is an article on an updated gauge for all machines listed in the scan.

The6B2355 gauge shows the "Operating Range" lube pressure as being between 10 and 40 PSI.

The updated gauge shows "Operating Range" lube pressure as being between 4 and 11 PSI before the gauge pegs out at full scale reading.

From this we can see that 18 PSI would be well within the "Operating Range" and therefore safe to operate.

Your 22 engine is a big low RPM low stressed engine with large bearing areas to work safely at low oil pressures.
By the article you can see that the higher stressed D2 thru to D8 Diesel engines of the day worked safely at these pressures--and with the same gauges.
In reality these engines only need a supply of oil to safely operate due to the large bearing areas they have been designed with. If the bearings were small like an auto engine they would need higher pressures to last.

I feel 18 PSI is a safe pressure to operate at.

The reason Cat fitted these style gauges was so that people only needed to see that their engines' oil pressure was within the "Operating Range"

As you have found, you see 18 PSI, and think there is a problem, BUT, in reality there is not one for these style engines. They operate at low RPM's, unlike an auto engine.

The plugs with the big hex. cups can be undone with a tool made from a nut or bolt head.
Cat do sell the tooling but if you do a "search" here you should find where people have shown how they made suitable tools for the job real cheap. They welded a suitable sized nut or bolt to a piece of flat steel and did the job.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

okay thankyou... i was wondering if it was forsure the fill caps before i make a wrench just to figure out its the wrong one lol... and my guage is not the same as either in the picture but as it shows the highest "minimum operating range" is 10 and im pretty sure 18 would be fine for mine as you have explained... THANKYOU!!!

Replied by edb on topic 22 Lube Chart
Hi LCM,
copy/save this lube chart while it is still up, paste the two pieces together to form the full chart, and file it away for future reference.

The Chart is from my grey covered 22 Tractor Operator's Instruction Book, Form No 4313. Maybe keep an eye on ebay for one.

With regards your Oil Pressure Gauge reading, it is not unknown for gauges to read incorrectly.
If you have another gauge of known accuracy you can double check your actual Oil Pressure with it and be sure of what you have, or, at least check against the other gauge.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

it took about 2mins to make... lol... and i pulled all of the plugs and the left final was full and brownish, the right was about 3/4 full and black and the tranny had about 2 or 3 drops... so im planning on getting a couple gallons of deisel, but my one question is how long should i run it??? i need to clean all of the cases out...
